In this blog post, I have compiled a selection of six enchanting wizards and witches that I adore, accompanied by a handful of interesting details. Honestly, it was hard to choose. Harry Potter wizards could dominate the entire list, but I’m limiting myself to only two.
Are these your favorites too? List more in the comments.
1. Albus Dumbledore
I consider Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore to be one of the most powerful wizards in the Harry Potter universe. Known for his long white beard, half-moon spectacles, and flowing robes, Dumbledore is known for his wisdom, kindness, and strong moral compass. He is the headmaster of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is a mentor figure for Harry Potter. His pet phoenix, Fawkes, plays a significant role in the Harry Potter series.
2. Harry Potter
Harry James Potter is an orphan and raised by his aunt and uncle, the Dursleys, who treated him poorly. At age eleven, Harry discovers he is a wizard when he is invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Known for his bravery, loyalty, determination, and as the “Boy Who Lived”, Harry becomes a symbol of hope and resistance against Voldemort’s tyranny.
3. Gandalf the Grey
In Lord of the Rings, Gandalf is one of the greatest wizards sent to unite the people against the evil of Sauron. He possesses the magical ring called Narya, the Ring of Fire, which he uses to inspire hope and courage in others. As a part of the order of wizards known as the Istari, Gandalf uses his staff as both a weapon and a tool for his magic. Gandalf’s transformation into Gandalf the White represents his increased power and authority.
4. Merlin
Merlin is a legendary figure associated with Arthurian legends and British folklore. The origin of Merlin’s character can be traced back to Welsh mythology. He is said to possess prophetic powers and can see into the future. According to legend, Merlin was born as a result of a union between a mortal woman and an otherworldly being, maybe a demon or an incubus. He played a key role in creating Arthur’s famous sword, Excalibur. The sword was crafted by Tom the blacksmith and burnished in Kilgharrah’s fiery breath at Merlin’s request, imbuing it with the power to kill anything. They credit Merlin with helping King Arthur become the rightful king of Britain by guiding him and providing magical assistance.
5. Willow Rosenberg
As a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I had to include Willow on my list. The red-haired girl with a quirky fashion sense starts out as a timid young teenager. Throughout the series, Willow discovers her latent magical abilities and becomes a powerful witch, Dark Willow, who nearly destroyed the world.
6. Jafar
Jafar, the Grand Vizier of Agrabah, serves as an advisor to the sultan. He is the antagonist of Disney’s Aladdin. He uses his magic in secret to manipulate the sultan’s mind and eventually plots to usurp the throne. By disguising himself as an old man named “Old Man Jafar”, he manipulates Aladdin to further his own agenda. Throughout the film, his pet parrot, Lago, serves as his sidekick and comic relief. Jafar’s iconic line is “You’re only a fool If you think you can defeat me!”
